Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuts this Friday at Disney +.
With WandaVision now in the rearview mirror, Marvel fans turned their attention to the impending debut of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier this Friday. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their roles as Sam Wilson (the Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) for a series that takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
As we reported earlier, after the Avengers and their many allies finally defeated Thanos in EndgameSteve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans) handed Sam his shield so he could take on the mantle. But will Sam accept that? That’s a big part of what The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will explore throughout its six episodes, and showrunner Malcolm Spellman said the tone will be similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Sam and Bucky are going to “team up on a global adventure that tests your skills – and your patience.” The main villain will be Baron Helmut Zemo, a Sokovian colonel who became a terrorist obsessed with defeating the Avengers, with Daniel Brühl reprising the role of Captain America Civil War. Director Kari Skogland said his appearance on the series shows him “paying for his crimes” and “in a very sad place”.
Emily VanCamp reprimands her Civil war role as Sharon Carter, daughter of Steve Rogers’ associate Peggy Carter. Don Cheadle will make an appearance in the series as Rhodey / War Machine, and Georges St-Pierre is back as a mercenary and kickboxing master Georges Batroc, whose last MCU appearance was in Winter Soldier. Wyatt Russell plays John F. Walker, chosen by the US government to be Captain America’s successor. (Walker apparently appears to be “a better personification of American values than Rogers.” So he certainly lacks confidence.)
The studio released an amazing, action-packed trailer for the series during the Disney Investor Day in December, which displayed the friendly vibe of the titular superheroes, exchanging barbs and jokes as they battled the bad guys. A second trailer last month gave us a split-second look at Zemo’s signature purple mask amidst all the action.
The final trailer opens with Sam practicing to throw Cap’s old shield, telling Bucky that “it looks like it belongs to someone else”. Both are clearly struggling with the burden of trying to live up to Steve Rogers’ legacy and what he has meant to so many. Mackie said that his character feels a particular apprehension for taking the shield: “How does a black man represent a country that does not represent him?” As for Bucky, Stan said his character on the show is “very lost and having an identity crisis again”, battling a century of trauma and his own persistent dark nature.
“Symbols are nothing without the men and women who give them meaning,” said Sam in a speech in honor of Rogers, while another scene shows a politician insisting, “We need someone to inspire us again.” Those who want a little more from Zemo will be disappointed; he is practically absent from this final trailer, as is Walker. But we have a little more footage of the “anarchist anti-patriotism group” called Flag-Smashers, with Erin Kellerman playing one of the masked members, Karli Morgenthau. “We will never stop. This world is ours,” we heard her say about a montage of masked looters robbing a bank and often creating confusion. “There is no turning back.” Sam tries to tell her that it doesn’t have to be a war. But in Karli’s eyes, “it already is.”
