Chicago PDKim Burgess, from Kim Burgess, made a decision that changed her life on Wednesday, and will certainly affect her professional and romantic relationships. Marina Squerciati, who plays the oppressed officer, opened up for TVLine what is to come.
This week’s episode saw Intelligence investigate a series of car thefts that led the crew to discover an illegal child prostitution ring. The delicate case also put Burgess in the way of Michaela, the young woman she had helped in the January 13 episode “Age of Tenderness”. After Michaela’s caregiver decided to give up his guardian rights, Burgess stepped in to promote his ex-witness. The episode ended with the Intelligence officer slowly and carefully exiting the parking lot with Michaela in the back seat and terror on his face. Is Burgess ready to deal with that kind of responsibility?

“I don’t think she knows [what she’s getting into]. She’s just acting on instinct, ”says Squerciati of Burgess’ big decision. “Ruzek hits the bull’s-eye [when he tells her] ‘I don’t think you can stand to see the loss of another child’, which I think is true. She realizes that most of these children, especially older ones, will not do so well, so this is a motivating force. “
Squerciati added that he believes that Burgess and Michaela “have a special connection”, which helps in their new precarious situation.
It is still too early to determine how exactly this big decision will affect Burgess professionally, but it looks like it could be a game changer for her and Ruzek: over there, ”explained Squerciati. “There are some things that you have to give up [when you become a parent], and I think Burgess might think it’s Ruzek. I don’t know, but I have a feeling we’re going in that direction. “
Burgess’ situation is even more complicated, since she is a white woman raising a black girl and will have some blind spots when it comes to raising a child of another race. Squerciati hopes that the problem is something that her character does not ignore, and that she will continue to rely on her close friend Atwater (played by LaRoyce Hawkins) – who raised her little sister Vinessa (Documentary now! ‘s Bobbi MacKenzie) – for support. Burgess contacted Atwater in Wednesday’s episode to ask for his opinion on the possible adoption – a move that appears to have helped inform his decision to promote Michaela.
“I’m very happy that that scene with Atwater happened because I feel that without it, you are in danger of being a type of episode of the white savior type. The fact that she recognized and talked to him about the racial factor, I think, really helps ”, explains Squerciati.
When it comes to parenting, Squerciati thinks Burgess has a lot to consider. “There are so many things that I have been thinking about. I don’t know how to do black hair and kevin [Atwater] could teach me how to do it ”, he adds. “And, of course, there are bigger issues and bigger blind spots that I hope our writers will address. But I was thinking of little things that I wouldn’t know that Atwater would think because he had Vinessa that we could talk about. “
