Marilyn Hartman, ‘serial stowaway’, arrested at O’Hare International Airport

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office told CNN in a statement that it was notified that it had left the facility around noon on Tuesday, and that the electronic monitoring team immediately started trying to find its location.

“The team tried to contact Hartman using the phone built into the device, but Hartman did not respond,” the statement said. “Investigators at the Electronic Monitoring Unit found that her device indicated that she was traveling in the direction of O’Hare International Airport.”

As investigators headed for the airport, the sheriff’s office notified the Chicago Police Department that Hartman appeared to be heading to the airport, according to the statement. At around 1:38 pm, police were notified that Hartman was near Terminal 1.

An alarm was activated on her ankle monitoring device and she was detained by Chicago police, the statement said. Hartman has not entered any secure areas, said the sheriff’s office.

Hartman will be returned to Cook County prison and the sheriff’s office said it is seeking approval to charge Hartman with escape from crime.

Officials at A Safe Haven, the nonprofit home where Hartman is residing, told CNN affiliate WBBM that they did not comment on Tuesday how Hartman managed to leave the residence.
WBBM broadcast an interview with Hartman two days before his last arrest.

A trend in airport arrests

Hartman made national headlines for the first time in August 2014, when she was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for successfully boarding a flight from Mineta San Jose International Airport without a ticket. She did not contest the charges and was sentenced to parole. The next day, she was arrested again at Los Angeles International Airport.

His streak continued at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. On August 14, Hartman received a warning for trying to enter a security checkpoint without a ticket. Twelve days later, she was arrested at an airport terminal for criminal invasion. The day after that, Hartman was seen again wandering around a security checkpoint, Phoenix police said.

She was arrested in Florida in 2015. Another arrest occurred in O’Hare in 2016 for violating her probation, which forbade her to set foot on airport properties. She was sentenced to six months of house arrest at a mental health facility for violating court orders to stay away from airports, the WBBM reported.

She was then arrested at O’Hare again in January 2018, after British officials arrested her in London. She was charged with a misdemeanor for trespassing and a charge of theft after being able to travel from Chicago to London without a passport or boarding pass.

In October 2019, she was arrested after trying to get past O’Hare security without a boarding pass or ID.
WBBM reported that Hartman was released from Cook County Jail and placed on home monitoring in March 2020 after being attacked in prison, and after the coronavirus pandemic became a concern for prisoners.

Reporters who followed his arrests said that the success of his evasive maneuvers depends on his ability to blend into the crowd as an elderly and apparently harmless white woman.
