March Madness begins with players kneeling during the national anthem

Some college basketball players competing in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on Friday knelt down during the national anthem before their games started.

Colgate and Ohio State players were seen kneeling during the national anthem before the game. Colgate, a No. 14 seed, was beating No. 3 in Arkansas. Ohio State players were seen kneeling before the game against Oral Roberts. According to the Associated Press, players from Virginia Tech, Florida and Drexel also knelt before their games.

College basketball players began the season on their knees during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality. But several other problems have emerged since the start of the season.

Before the games started on Thursday and Friday, players from Michigan, Rutgers and Iowa asked the NCAA to end amateurism so that student-athletes can benefit from their names, images and similarities. These players tweeted their demands for the NCAA with #NotNCAAProperty.

Players also criticized in the NCAA the disparity between the bubble configurations on the Indianapolis website, where men are playing, and on the San Antonio website, where women are playing.

Photos and videos circulated on social media Thursday and Friday showing the differences in the weight rooms, food selection and gift bags that men and women earn during the tournament.
