Although Pixel devices have only one physical SIM card slot, you can simultaneously add and use an eSIM with Dual SIM Dual Standby. At launch, DSDS on Pixel 5 and 4a 5G reduced users to 4G connectivity, but yesterday’s security patch allows 5G support.
Android 12 Developer Preview 1 was the first to allow 5G and DSDS on the Pixel 5, as well as on the Pixel 4a 5G. Google has been working to add support for Android 11 since November, but is only now airing with the March security patch.
This addition was not mentioned by Google, but there are several reports today saying that this feature is now available. For its part, Google has not yet updated its supporting document on the subject.
When two SIMs are installed, “5G” will now work (and will appear in the status bar) without having to temporarily disable one in Settings or through physical removal. Although the use of dual SIM is limited, those in need can finally use the key capability of their new cell phone.
On 4G, DSDS has been available since Pixel 3a in 2019, and it’s lucky that owners don’t have to wait until the final 2021 public launch of Android 12 or public beta.
DSDS and 5G make the March feature drop a little more interesting, with some users complaining about the lack of major changes beyond the backup of the recorder and access to the web. Other features, like underwater photography, require an expensive case or a $ 79 Pixel Stand for an enhanced sleep experience.
