Marc Maron left James Cameron’s avatar audition thinking ‘WTF?’

Kate Winslet tells Marc Maron that she “lost track” of how many “Avatar” sequences James Cameron was shooting at one time.

During Kate Winslet’s recent interview on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, the presenter made a surprise revelation that he once visited James Cameron’s huge “Avatar” studio in Manhattan Beach for an audition and came out weird with the set’s insanity of “Avatar”. Maron did not reveal the details of his audition to Cameron (presumably it was for the “Avatar” sequences), but he shared with Winslet the general confusion he felt during his visit.

“He made me go there to audition for something, to look at me for something,” said Maron. “I had to go to that city he built, the ‘Avatar’ city and it was the weirdest thing. I walked in and he said, ‘We have actors here working all the time, flying around and stuff. So, if you want to join a set, we’ll just do it. ‘I was like,’ What the hell is going on here? ‘ “

Winslet can relate to Maron’s experience after filming his scenes for several sequels to “Avatar” in 2018. Cameron is planning four sequences for his 2009 blockbuster and filmed the first two interchangeably that Winslet often had no idea of. which sequence she was filming.

“I lost count of how many he’s winning at once,” said Winslet. “I did two at once, together with him. All my work was in 2018 … It is an extraordinary experience. You enter this huge aircraft hangar and anything is possible. Do you want to fly today? Do you want to fight with spears underwater? Of course, let’s do this. It was wonderful for me to be part of a machine so well oiled, with such great artists and technicians. “

Winslet said it “was amazing” to be collaborating with his “Titanic” director Cameron again, especially since he is a more confident director on set all these years later. As Winslet explained: “He has a lot more time to do [‘Avatar’] than he ever had with ‘Titanic’. There is a process that he is entering, a rhythm, which is very relaxed. He is so intrinsically connected to this whole world because he created it, so there is a trust in him that breathes collaboration and conversation. “

Cameron approached Winslet on the first day she appeared in the “Avatar” studio for a read table and warned that everyone had “drunk Kool Aid” and shouldn’t be scared by the cast and crew speaking the fictional Na’vi language to another. Winslet said that “there is a suitable immersive experience” to enter the world of “Avatar”.

“Avatar 2” is scheduled to open in Disney theaters on December 16, 2022.
