It probably won’t be a surprise that the successful Disney Plus series The Mandalorian won the (unfortunate) most pirated TV show title of 2020 – using the popular torrenting site BitTorrent.
According to TorrentFreak’s analysis (via IndieWire), Game of Thrones was the most pirated TV show for seven consecutive years. But the HBO series ended in 2019, leaving the Mandalorian to improve its ranking from third to number 1 in 2020.
Obviously, it’s not a great title, but it reflects the wider availability of Disney Plus, which reached more than 80 million subscribers in December, just over a year after its launch in November 2019. The number of subscribers has increased by 13 million since September, probably due to the new availability of Disney Plus in Latin America. In comparison, Netflix currently has more than 190 million subscribers, following its launch of streaming 13 years ago.
Second came Amazon’s censored superhero series, The Boys, one of Prime Video’s most viewed original shows. HBO Western Westworld’s science fiction ranked third, despite mixed reception to its third series. Prime Video Vikings came in fourth, CBS’s Star Trek: Picard in fifth, followed by Rick and Morty from Adult Swim, AMC’s The Walking Dead, HBO’s The Outsider, The CW’s Arrow and The CW’s Flash.
