Man with armor, weapons and possible explosives is arrested at the University of Kentucky hospital

A man was arrested on Thursday afternoon after authorities found him with firearms, bulletproof vests and possible explosives at a University of Kentucky hospital in Lexington.

Authorities were told by police outside Versailles, Kentucky, that suspect Bryan Carroll may be “armed and dangerous,” said University of Kentucky Chief of Police Joe Monroe. Carroll was reportedly at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital to visit a relative.

FBI and ATF agents were on site assisting local police officers in the investigation. Several EMS and firefighters were also on site, as well as personnel dressed in anti-bomb clothing and a bomb disposal robot.Jacqueline Nie / LEX 18

“He will be charged with several state charges, as well as pending federal charges,” said Monroe.

No one was injured and Carroll was taken without incident as he was leaving the hospital. Lexington police, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are helping to respond.

“I think we took an individual who could be considered armed and dangerous in custody very quickly, efficiently and without any harm to anyone, including himself,” said Monroe.

Monroe said authorities believed that Carroll could have explosive devices in his vehicle and was also found with firearms and bulletproof vests. It is unclear whether Carroll intended to use the devices or what his motive may have been.

Carroll was in police custody on Thursday afternoon and it is not clear whether he hired a lawyer. Carroll lives in Versailles, which is about 21 kilometers west of the hospital.
