The owner of an Asian gas station was sprayed with pepper spray by an unidentified man in Oakland, California, last week. The incident occurred at a gas station along Broadway at around 11 am on March 11. The man was frustrated after trying to pay for gas using rooms, according to ABC7’s Dion Lim.
“My team, she’s like, ‘Well, wait a minute. You kind of have to take this to the bank because I can’t put it all in the box, ‘” said the owner of the post, who wants to be identified as Cwell. Cwell would have tried to calm the man down. However, the situation got worse when the man started making xenophobic comments at Cwell. “He just started babbling … ‘You should go back to China’, like,” Cwell shared. “We were starting to laugh because it was so unbelievable.” The man told the gas station staff that he would be back. As a precautionary measure, Cwell went out with his cell phone to register the man’s license plate number. The man immediately turned to Cwell and shouted more racist comments: “Go f ** k your mother! Go f ** k your mommy! You are not from here! You’re Asian! Little d ** k! Little d ** k! “
: ”… **!”
The owner of the Oakland gas station, Cwell, said that this man made statements with a racial accusation after Cwell did not allow him to pay for gas in b / c because they could not fit the record. (1/4) pic.twitter.com/prZcG2G3sL – Dion Lim (@DionLimTV) March 15, 2021
The confrontation went from verbal aggression to physical aggression after the man backed up in the car, allegedly trying to hit the owner of the gas station.
When Cwell realized that the man was putting something in his pocket, he took a cleaning spray to protect himself.
But it was too late. Surveillance video shows the man spraying Cwell with what looks like pepper spray. Cwell had to go to the emergency room. https://t.co/pD3j5HV3Fs pic.twitter.com/wivtxz2rTC – Dion Lim (@DionLimTV) March 15, 2021
Security footage shows the man approaching Cwell with a can of pepper spray shortly after. “The guy took his pepper spray and shot me in the face, arms. I ended up going to the emergency room to be treated, ” Cwell said. The gas station team called the Oakland Police to report the attack and authorities rushed to the scene. Cwell hopes that what happened to him will raise awareness and show everyone that “Everyone goes through the same things.” “We just have to understand this and understand that we all have to work together,” he added. This recent attack is just one of the many anti-Asian incidents that have happened in Oakland in the past few months. Last week, a 75-year-old man was left injured in an assault with strong weapons. The victim died days later. Do you have a hate incident to report? Help us document the recent increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans by visiting STOP THE HATE AAPI to report an incident.
