Man shot on suspicion of paramilitary assault in Derry

A man was taken to hospital after being shot in the leg in Derry on Friday night, in what police suspect is a “paramilitary-style attack”.

His injuries are not considered fatal, although they can change his life, according to a statement from the Northern Ireland Police Service (PSNI). Firefighters also came to the scene, as a vehicle was set on fire.

This is the second shooting in the city in two days.

The police are now appealing for information after what they described as “barbaric shooting” outside a residential property in the Creggan Heights area at around 7:45 pm.

PSNI Sergeant Detective Gavin McLaughlin said an investigation was launched into the incident that “bears all the marks of a paramilitary-style attack.”

He added: “Those responsible for this criminal act do not represent the interests of this community, nor do they contribute anything to it. They do this to try to exert influence or gain control of those they claim to represent. “

SDLP and MP leader Foyle Colum Eastwood said on Twitter: “Tonight’s shooting in Creggan marks the second attack on the community since Wednesday night. [Yesterday] we heard the appeals of the people of Creggan to those responsible to end this violence ”.

He added: “The people of Derry don’t want that. They must stop terrorizing our community now. “

Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan condemned the shooting, saying, “At a time when our hospitals are under heavy pressure and people are dying as a result of the pandemic, it is the last thing the people of Derry want to see.”

Anyone with information should contact the police at number 101, quoting number 1634/8/01/21, or submit an online report using the PSNI non-emergency report form.
