Man shot dead by Philadelphia police after opening fire on crowd

A gunman in Philadelphia was shot and killed by police officers after he opened fire on a crowd in a wild Christmas morning scene that also left one teenager dead and another injured, police said.

The incident occurred around 12:20 pm on Friday, when police responded to a dispute between neighbors in the Port Richmond neighborhood, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Once there, they found a group of 10 to 15 people starting to fight.

When the police tried to separate them, a 40-year-old man came out of a nearby property and shot the crowd, the police said.

The officers responded to the fire, hitting the sniper several times and killing him, the officers said.

Two teenagers were also shot, which killed one and injured the other, police said.

Police said it was not clear who shot the teenagers.

“We are not sure, but (the sniper) was shooting at the crowd where passersby were,” said the Philadelphia police sergeant. Eric Gripp said.

None of the officers involved were injured.
