If you don’t know how to use the hearing setup on an iPhone, you’re not alone.
The feature, which basically turns your phone into a live listening device, is going viral on TikTok. This is largely due to the user @brycenor, who explained how you can use the function to spy on your friends.
TikToker shared the iPhone hack in response to a current trend in the app, which asks users to reveal something that “seems illegal to know”.
“I don’t think it should be illegal, but it’s obscure,” says @brycenor at the beginning of his clip.
As @brycenor explains in his video, the listening setup can be used with AirPods to hear other people’s conversations – even when you’re not in the room. Setting up the function is as simple as opening your iPhone’s settings application.
From there, you select the option “Control Center” and click on “Hearing”. Then, you can activate the feature in your phone’s control center, place your AirPods and leave the phone in another room. As @brycenor puts it: “You can leave it in any room. You can hear what anyone is saying at any time. “
Some TikTok users were thrilled to discover the function, but many were frightened by it.
“Don’t trust people with AirPods, I understand,” wrote one user.
“Why did my heart rate skyrocket,” wrote another.
“This is dangerous,” added another.
Others pointed out that the listening environment can be worse for the person using it.
“I already think EVERYONE talks about me,” wrote one user.
“No. I don’t want to hurt my feelings,” added another.
As some users have pointed out, the hearing configuration has been designed as an accessibility feature for iPhone users – especially those with hearing impairments. By turning off background noise, the “live listening” tool allows users to hear conversations more easily.
