Man dies of suicide outside Rep. Beth Van Duyne’s home in Texas

A man killed himself outside Rep. Beth Van Duyne’s home in the Dallas suburb on Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.

Irving police responded to a report of a shootout at about 3:45 pm local time, said officer Robert Reeves. When they arrived, they found a man on the sidewalk who had killed himself with a firearm.

Van Duyne was at home at the time with other people, but he did not witness the incident, said Reeves. They heard the shot and called 911 when they discovered the man lying on the sidewalk.

The coroner is working to identify the man.

Investigators will investigate the reason and how the man entered Van Duyne’s gated community.

Police said there was no reason to believe there was another threat to Van Duyne, a Republican. The FBI is helping with the investigation.

Van Duyne’s spokesman said the congresswoman was “shocked and saddened that someone took her own life. We have no further comment at this time,” according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
