Man arrested with gun near the vice president’s official residence

A man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon near the Naval Observatory, the official residence of Vice President Kamala Harris, for firearm crimes. Police initially said a rifle and ammunition were found in his vehicle, located about a block away.

The police report, obtained by CBS Washington, DC affiliate WUSA-TV, said he had a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle, 113 rounds of unregistered ammunition and five rounds of 30 rounds.

Harris and her husband, the second gentleman Doug Emhoff, currently do not reside at the Naval Observatory, which is undergoing renovations.

According to a police report from Texas, Paul Michael Murray, 31, had been experiencing paranoid delusions that the government and the military were after him. Police said he recently purchased an AR-15 and may have it with him in DC. Police said Murray’s mother received a message from him on Wednesday morning that he was in Washington and would take care of his problem.

Murray, of San Antonio, was arrested by the Secret Service and then arrested by the Metropolitan Police. He was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, rifle or shotgun outside a company, possession of unregistered ammunition, and possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device.

It is unclear whether Murray intended to harm or contact Harris or members of his family.
