Man arrested at the Washington checkpoint with a gun and 500 rounds of ammunition, police said.

United States Capitol Police arrested a man on Friday after he arrived at a security checkpoint in Washington with an unregistered gun and more than 500 rounds of ammunition, according to a report by the Metropolitan Police Department of the city.

The man, Wesley A. Beeler, of Front Royal, Virginia, was charged with five crimes, including illegal possession of a gun and ammunition, according to the report.

Beeler had driven to a security checkpoint on E Street NE in Washington, where officers found he had a Glock pistol, 509 pistol cartridges and 21 shotgun shells, the report said. This street leads to an area just blocks from the US Capitol Police headquarters and the Capitol itself.

A Capitol Police spokeswoman did not immediately respond to investigations into the prison, and Metropolitan Police Department officials declined to comment in addition to releasing the report because Capitol Police was the prison agency. Mr. Beeler was not found immediately.
