Man allegedly stealing property shot by Michigan owner, police said

VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI – A home owner in Van Buren County killed a man who was allegedly stealing his property on Sunday, police said.

Officers responded to a theft report at 6:23 am on Sunday, March 21, in the 42nd Street area in Decatur Township, Michigan State Police said, posting Paw Paw in a press release.

An initial investigation determined that two people called the police to their residence to intervene in an ongoing theft, the police said.

Before the soldiers arrived, the police said that both owners found the suspect outside the home.

One of the owners shot the suspect, identified by the police as Jeffrey Horton, 28, of Decatur. Horton died at the scene after the owners and the police tried to save lives.

The owners have not been identified or arrested by the police and the incident is under investigation, the police said.

A report that includes forensic analysis will be forwarded to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office for review and determine whether the charges will be made.

State police received on-site assistance from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department and the Decatur Police Department.
