Mama June says she won 60 pounds. ‘Healthy COVID weight’ after leaving rehab

Mama June Shannon is opening up about her recent weight gain after her rehab period.

During the Friday premiere of Mama June: Road to Redemption, the 41-year-old reality show star said she and her boyfriend Eugene Edward “Geno” Doak – who had been sober for seven months at the time of the episode – gained weight during their harrowing journey to sobriety.

“We gained a few extra pounds,” said June in an interview for the cameras, while eating several snacks in the kitchen, much to Genoa’s dismay.

“I put on 60, he put on 100. We put on a totally different person,” said June, adding, “But I’m going to blame the healthy weight of COVID.”

“How much fucking COVID did we eat?” Geno said to his girlfriend with a laugh.

June, who went into rehab after her arrest in 2019 on charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, said in the episode that her and Geno’s relationship has grown stronger than ever since they became sober.

“I must say that sobriety has changed our relationship,” she said. “Now, we are able to have a clear mind and spend time with each other and reconnect our relationship and get to know each other without drugs.”

“I’m kind of enjoying these sober things,” added Geno.

Mama June: Road to Redemption follows the TV star looking to fix his broken relationship with his family after his drug arrest in March 2019.

At the time, June was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, after allegedly having crack and a crack pipe with her. Geno was also arrested, PEOPLE previously reported.

Both were hit by criminal charges for drug possession in September 2019. The couple’s lawyer pleaded not guilty on his behalf the following month, a Macon County District Attorney’s representative confirmed to PEOPLE at the time.

In April 2020, The Blast reported that an Alabama judge ordered the June criminal trial to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, all hearings were supposedly postponed until autumn.

Last August, June announced that she and Geno had reached the six-month milestone on their sobriety journey.

“It’s probably the thing I’m most proud of,” she said in an Instagram video at the time, while showing off the coin of sobriety. “Because now Geno and I have been clean for more than six months.”

“This is incredible, folks,” she added. “I am so proud of it.”

And in January, June shared a long message on Instagram in honor of being sober for a year.
