Major winter storm will hit Louisiana and Mississippi on Monday, near southern Mississippi

Mostly cold rain is expected across southern Mississippi (Pearl River, Stone, George, Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties). However, as the rain comes out and temperatures start to fall, a transition to freezing rain or hail or a mixture of the two is possible. It is not out of the question that a very thin layer of ice can accumulate on elevated surfaces such as trees, transmission lines and roads in areas along and west of HWY 49 and north of I-10, such as: Pearl River, Stone , northwest of Harrison and northern Hancock counties. This can cause a slippery trip early Monday afternoon. Whether that cold nail polish can reach the coast or not depends on how quickly the cold air enters and how quickly or slowly the moisture leaves. Significant accumulations of freezing rain and hail are not expected, but it does not take much to cause travel problems. Although some snowflakes can mix with this, snow accumulation is unlikely.
