Maine reports 189 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday

Maine reported 189 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. There were no additional deaths.

Tuesday’s figures reflect Maine’s continuing tendency to record slightly higher case counts compared to two weeks – or an incubation period – ago.

The seven-day average of new daily cases was 191.3 on Tuesday, compared with 173 two weeks ago and 164.1 a month ago.

Maine is seeing an increase in the number of cases in Kennebec County, where there are now 2.1 cases per 10,000 people over an average of seven days, an increase of 63% over last week. Piscataquis County had the highest infection rate in Maine, 2.6 cases per 10,000 people, but rates fell 25% last week.

Cumberland County is relatively stagnant, with 1.7 cases per 10,000 people, but only a 4% increase. York County also has 1.7 cases per 10,000 people, but experienced a 23% increase in cases last week.

Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, will be doing a media briefing at 2 pm today.

Meanwhile, Maine continues to rush to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible, part of the strategy to prevent another increase. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Maine has recorded 47,388 positive cases of COVID-19 and 725 deaths.

The vaccinations updated for Tuesday were not immediately available, but the latest immunization data show that 323,049 people in Maine – representing 24 percent of the population – received at least the first dose on Monday.

Another mass vaccination site, operated by Central Maine Healthcare, will open on Wednesday at Auburn Mall. The site will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 8 am to 6 pm and will have the capacity to serve 1,000 patients per day.

Auburn Mall’s location joins the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Scarborough Downs, Portland Expo and the former Marshalls in Sanford as mass vaccination sites. On Friday, the Piscataquis County Ice Arena in Dover-Foxcroft will open as a mass vaccination site, operated by Northern Light Health.

Maine is one of 17 states that has seen an increase in average daily cases in the past two weeks, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US CDCD, said at a news conference on Monday that she is concerned about a national increase in COVID-19 cases, after seeing negative trends in several European countries.

“Each of these countries had nadirs like the ones we are having now, and each assumed an upward trend after disregarding known mitigation strategies. They just took their eyes off the ball, ”said Walensky.

Currently, 86 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Maine, including 26 in intensive care.
