Maine CDC does not report new COVID cases because the state laboratory was closed on Christmas

No new cases of coronavirus were reported on Saturday in Maine because the state laboratory that processes the test samples was closed on Friday for the Christmas holiday.

Other labs that typically report the results to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention also failed to do so over the holiday, said Robert Long, a Maine CDC spokesman, by email on Saturday.

The Maine CDC lab team resumed sample processing on Saturday and the results of their work will be reflected in Sunday’s data update. Most case investigators also did not work on the holiday, although emergency service was available, and resumed work on Saturday.

As of Friday, there were 21,547 cases of COVID-19 reported in Maine since the start of the pandemic, including 321 new cases reported on Friday. A total of 319 people died and more than 1,000 were hospitalized at some point.
