MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – Macomb County executive Mark Hackel said the county is ready and not playing any games when it comes to distributing vaccines.

That’s why they are expanding the list of people who can get vaccinations in Macomb County. From Saturday, anyone aged 16 or over with a disability can call and make an appointment.

“Basically, what we did was decided that these people with disabilities and other family members or caregivers and even their guardians sometimes have the opportunity to go ahead and apply for the vaccine,” said Hackel. “16 years or more. We are working with our school districts to identify people who may be in these categories. “

Hackel said this is a major achievement, but they still target the elderly in the first place.

“Our biggest concern was making sure we took care of our elderly first and I tell you, we are more than 100,000 elderly people here in Macomb County,” said Hackel.

But how do you determine who is telling the truth about your condition and who is not?

“A lot of that is based on the honor system,” said Hackel. “I don’t know many people who are going to take advantage of this and try to be successful.”

Of course, Hackel expects more people to call. There will be more connections and more commitments.

“We are prepared and, once again, I think we will be able to open up earlier to just about everyone – to anyone who wants the vaccine – earlier than likely by the April 5 deadline,” said Hackel.
