O Star Wars The gaming galaxy is about to experience its own Big Bang.
“We have a lot of things that we are ready to start sharing with fans,” Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly told StarWars.com, “because we’ve been working quietly behind the scenes for a while, waiting for this moment. “
And by “this moment”, Reilly is referring to a new direction and was meant to Star Wars and Lucasfilm games in general, as Lucasfilm Games is now opening doors for developers who want to come and play in the galaxy far, far away. “We want to work with the best teams, who can make great games across our IP. We have a team of professionals here at Lucasfilm Games who can work with the developers, shape the stories, shape the creative, shape the games, to make them really resonate with fans and deliver on a variety of platforms, genres and experiences so that all our fans can enjoy the IPs they know and love ”, he says.
For example, the big news that Lucasfilm Games and Ubisoft are collaborating in a new open and story-driven world Star Wars games. It is a genre long requested by fans and will come to life through Massive Entertainment, the critically acclaimed Ubisoft studio based in Malmö, Sweden. “We are very excited about the opportunity to work with the Massive team, led by David Polfeldt and creative director, Julian Gerighty. We spent almost a year working to get to know them and what they want to bring to the table, ”says Reilly. “I am a huge fan of them, personally. I think we are really excited about the direction of this project, because they have a unique vision for the story and the game they want to deliver. “
Of course, Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment are known for their expertise in developing immersive worlds and expanding the limits of technology with their proprietary engine, Snowdrop. “We know that fans of Star Wars value the feeling of immersion – of being transported to the Star Wars galaxy and moving in richly detailed environments. It’s fun to imagine what the Massive team can do within Star Wars bringing its innovative spirit and its commitment to quality ”, says Reilly.
And for fans of the modern Star Wars games, don’t be afraid: some old friends are around.
Continuing the relationship that resulted in the reinvigorated Battlefront series, the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderand multiplayer success Star Wars: Squadrons, Electronic Arts will also play a big role in the future of Star Wars games. “We are very proud of the games we created with EA,” says Reilly. “We will continue to work with them and our relationship has never been stronger. While we may not have many details to share at the moment, we have a number of projects underway with talented EA teams. “
As with EA in recent years, Lucasfilm Games will continue to guide titles from a franchise perspective, ensuring Star Wars authenticity for connectivity of the story within the larger saga. “We try to help them leverage their passion, experience and idea, bringing our experience around the IP, our ability to connect with other parts of Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company, to amplify that. To make it even bigger than they can imagine, ”says Reilly. “We want to discover the stories they always imagined to tell and make them resonate with our fans and around the world Star Wars galaxy.”
All of these new features come in the wake of an official return to the classic Lucasfilm Games brand. And there is meaning to that change. “This is really the culmination of years of preparation to say, ‘We are here, we have a team of people, we are going to do a lot of great games and here are some new things that you were not expecting to do, we are starting to do’ ”Says Reilly. “And that will continue over the next year or so, where we will continue to announce projects that are more representative of the legacy of the old Lucasfilm Games that we are now trying to accomplish.”
Part of that legacy includes a certain adventurous archaeologist, who is also returning to games. “The decision, in a way, was very easy,” says Reilly. “I wanted to make a Indiana Jones game for a long time, and we never had the right partner and idea to make it happen. We are extraordinarily lucky to work with Todd Howard, the executive producer of the next game, which will be developed by MachineGames and the Bethesda team. He has a unique vision and a unique passion for Indiana Jones, and introduced us to such an incredible story and concept that I can’t wait to start sharing it with people. I Love Star Wars and we love to do Star Wars games, but it’s been a long time since we did Indy. We are really excited about this. “
For Star Wars and Lucasfilm fans, there’s a lot to get excited about in the gaming realm. And Reilly promises that there is more to come. “This is just the beginning of what I think will be a very exciting year for Lucasfilm Games.”
