LSU Football to add former South Carolina assistant to the team

LSU football has several staff vacancies to fill this off-season.

If the LSU football team wants to bring together the best team possible, they must find a way to bring former South Carolina defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson to Baton Rouge.

Robinson, who served as defensive / technical coordinator for the 2016-2020 Gamecocks defensive backs, was not hired by new South Carolina coach Shane Beamer.

Beamer probably let Robinson go because South Carolina’s defense didn’t perform very well in 2020. The Gamecocks allowed 451.5 yards per game this season, which was 101st in the country.

So why should LSU want Robinson?

Because he is a great recruiter.

LSU football needs a security coach who can recruit

Since Bill Busch will not return in 2021, Tigers need to ensure that they include a security technician who can stand out on the recruiting trail.

I think Robinson, a former Auburn supporter, fits the bill.

“If you’re building a dream team of college recruiters, I don’t think there’s any doubt that T-Rob would be on that team now,” said AuburnSports.com reporter Bryan Matthews in 2015.

Robinson has a lot of experience at the SEC. He was trained in Auburn, Florida and South Carolina. He knows the recruiting landscape in the southeast. Robinson also has strong connections in Florida (he is from Miami), which can be huge for LSU.

The only problem with trying to add Robinson is that Florida will probably be after him too.

One scenario that could work at LSU would be to hire Will Muschamp as a defensive coordinator / linebacker and add Robinson as a security coach / co-defensive coordinator (Robinson worked with Muschamp in Auburn in 2015 and South Carolina in 2016-2020).

This is not necessarily a situation of the buried type for Tigers, but I think it is an option worth considering.

Everything should be on the table for LSU this off-season, including hiring a well-connected coach that South Carolina no longer wanted.
