On March 9, the North Carolina-based home remodeling company, whose mission has always been to give back to the communities it serves, is launching an initiative to complete 100 impact projects throughout 2021.

The effort – dubbed 100 hometowns – is a chance to “beautify forgotten spaces,” CEO Marvin Ellison told FOX Business.

Until April 19, people across the country will have the chance to nominate a project in their home town that needs funding.

Grants for each project – which will use the products, experience and, in some cases, their own associates – will be rewarded in June, said Ellison, adding that each project must be completed by the end of the year.

Eligible projects include the restoration and reconstruction of community spaces, such as parks, centers for the elderly or young people and neighborhood housing, as well as cultural preservation and revitalization of areas.

Each project will be funded based on the unique needs of the local community, according to Lowe’s.

“It is our way of making the communities in which we live better,” said Ellison, adding that “it is really about making a difference, not by looking inward, but by looking outward.”

Helping the community has always been a central focus for the company, from its early days as a small hardware store in North Carolina, to becoming one of the largest remodeling retailers, according to Ellison.

On his 100th birthday, however, Ellison said the company wanted to be more intentional in its efforts to help, especially after an unprecedented year rocked by COVID-19 and extreme weather conditions.

“The past year has led us to understand that, as a company, we have to make a more focused effort around how we support our community to deal with the pandemic,” said Ellison. Throughout 2020, Lowe’s issued nearly $ 1.3 billion to associates, communities and store security. The company also issued several rounds of bonuses to frontline employees throughout the year, while providing financial assistance to small rural businesses owned by minorities and women.

Lowes also continued to provide assistance and supplies to communities hard hit by disasters such as forest fires and hurricanes.

The company’s latest initiative only underscores “the company’s longstanding support for communities in the areas where we live and work,” said Ellison.

A team will evaluate each presentation to determine the level of need and the company’s ability to support the community.

Ellison said the company will also focus on ensuring that projects are “balanced”, meaning that there will be “representation across the country – from rural to urban and suburban projects – that reflect the diversity of our country and the communities we serve. “.

To launch his latest effort, Lowe’s teamed up with country music star and former Lowe’s associate Kane Brown. Together, they will renovate and repair the East Lake Boys & Girls Club in their hometown, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

100 Hometowns is an unprecedented program to celebrate the company’s centenary. However, Ellison said the company will continue the program if it succeeds.

“It all depends on whether we feel that we have made a positive impact,” he said.
