Los Angeles County Covid – 19 deaths in one day equals homicides in the city in one year, says the mayor

“Yesterday we had 259 deaths, one more than all the 2019 homicides in the city of Los Angeles combined,” he said. “In a single day, equal to a year of homicides”.

The city of Los Angeles has a population of almost 4 million people, while the county’s population is about 10 million.

“We are not, and never will be, getting used to these numbers as normal. Nor will I accept them as something that we should simply live with,” added the mayor. “Because each of these means everything to someone out there today.”

Every 8 minutes, someone dies in Covid-19 Los Angeles County

“We all need to continue to do more,” he said.

The region has been struggling for weeks against a brutal wave of infections and hospitalizations by Covid-19, which translate into an increasing number of deaths.
Los Angeles County officials now say that a person dies from Covid-19 every eight minutes.
“People who used to lead healthy and productive lives are now dying from a chance encounter with the Covid-19 virus,” health officials said earlier this week. “It only ends when each of us makes the right decisions to protect each other.”
More than 8,000 people are hospitalized with the virus across Los Angeles County, 20% of whom are in intensive care units.
'Human disaster' unfolds in LA will get worse, experts say
Since January 3, the number of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 has increased to more than 550 people, health officials said on Thursday.

And infections are growing wildly – accelerating at an “alarming” rate, they added.

“Everyone in Los Angeles County, businesses and residents, need to follow the rules if there is any chance of getting out of this wave by the end of the month,” said Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer in a statement.

“I implore everyone to stay at home as much as possible. Buying anything except food and medicine and mixing with other people are activities that we should all stop doing in the coming weeks as it increases the risk,” added Ferrer. “There are too many people spreading the virus, many people are sick and hospitalized and each person who dies is one too many.”
