Longtime ESPN baseball reporter Pedro Gomez died on Sunday at the age of 58.
Gomez has covered baseball for ESPN for over 30 years, making regular reports and appearing on major shows like “Baseball Tonight”, “Sunday Night Baseball” and “SportsCenter”.
“We are shocked and sad to learn that our friend and colleague Pedro Gomez passed away,” ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. “Pedro was an elite journalist at the highest level and his professional achievements are universally recognized. Most importantly, Pedro was a kind and dear friend to all of us. Our hearts are with Pedro’s family and all who love him at this extraordinary time. difficult.”
The sports network noted that Gomez leaves a wife, Sandra; sons, Rio and Dante; and daughter, Sierra.
Rio Gomez is a pitcher of the Boston Red Sox farm system.
“Our hearts are with the Gomez family,” said the Red Sox in a tweet on Sunday night.
Pedro Gomez’s parents immigrated to Cuba before his birth and he was part of the ESPN team covering a match between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban national team in Havana in 2016. Gomez returned his father’s and brother’s ashes to the family home , the network reported.
He lived on the West Coast and was well known for his coverage of Barry Bonds’ search for a career home run record from 2004 to 2007.
Condolences rained on Gomez from all over the baseball world on Sunday night.
