There is no real buzz about any of them staying at the moment, including defensive coordinator Chris Ash.

According to Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com, Dan Lanning of Georgia is the new name to be known in the search for Sarkisian’s defensive coordinator. Like Zach Arnett and Pete Golding, Lanning is a young and promising 34-year-old coach who has had tremendous success in Georgia over the past two seasons, after serving as coach of external linebackers in Athens for a year.

The process is advanced enough that Lanning interviewed the Horns this week, according to Dodd.

It appears that Arnett is the first known defensive coordinator to interview for the post, as Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Pete Colding, emerged as a candidate on Thursday.

Thursday 14h55 Central

According to several reports, Jeff Banks, Alabama’s strict limits coach / special team coordinator, will join Sarkisian in Austin. Horns247 reports that Banks agreed to a $ 3.15 million deal for three years. Banks has a reputation as an elite recruiter, especially in the state of Texas, so he will fill a large gap in Sarkisian’s team as Texas’ new head coach seeks to prevent the best talent from leaving the state.

Thursday 14h55 Central

The search for the defensive coordinator has been silent this week, except for Dan Quinn choosing to stay in the NFL, but finally there was some movement on Thursday morning with the appearance of Pete Golding as a target. Friday 21:27 Central

In the wake of a FootballScoop.com report that Texas will hire Terry Joseph, ESPN said it was done. Without a defensive coordinator in place yet, it sounds like strong language, but, as Football Scoop says, Joseph has already told people he is accepting the job.

Joseph has spent the past three years with Fighting Irish training defensive backs, after spells as a trainer in Tennessee, Nebraska, Texas A&M and North Carolina. Born in New Orleans, Joseph was successful in recruiting from Texas with the Aggies, but compared to Corey Raymond of LSU, he is not on the same recruiter level.

Friday 6:15 PM Central

There was not much buzz surrounding defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman of Texas and Cincinnati, but the Ohio native decided to accept Notre Dame’s work on Friday, rejecting LSU and other suitors. Scratch his name from any list of candidates for defensive coordinator for Sarkisian.

Friday 6:15 PM Central

FootballScoop.com reported on Friday that Sarkisian’s former head coach with the Atlanta Falcons, Dan Quinn, is a candidate for the position of defensive coordinator in Texas. Like Sarkisian, Quinn has deep ties to current Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll – after holding the title of defensive line coach by three other NFL teams, Quinn joined Carroll in Seattle in 2009 when Carroll took over the Seahawks and spent two seasons as an associate head coach.

In 2011, Will Muschamp hired Quinn as a defensive coordinator in Florida, where Quinn spent two seasons before returning to Carroll as a defensive coordinator. Quinn was in his sixth season as a Falcons coach when he was fired in mid-October.

Sarkisian spent two years as an offensive coordinator for Quinn in Atlanta, so it makes sense for Sarkisian to consider his former coach for the position. However, Quinn has spent just two of the past 20 years as a college assistant – before becoming an NFL assistant, Quinn was Hofstra’s defensive coordinator.

And he also never trained in a position other than the defensive line, which raises doubts about his fit with Detroit Lions defensive line coach Bo Davis, who is supposed to return to Texas for a second pass in the same role.

Davis is known as the type of strong recruiter the team needs, an area where Quinn is extremely lacking in experience – how would that work if Sarkisian hired Quinn and Davis?

To be sure, Quinn’s good faith as a longtime NFL coach and assistant would certainly sell well on the recruiting trail, but he would be a relatively unknown entity in that area.

According to the same report, Mississippi state defensive coordinator Zach Arnett also remains a candidate.
