Long lines mark the first day of the Lexington VA vaccine clinic

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The VA Healthcare system in Lexington vaccinated more than 1,000 veterans today, despite challenges on the clinic’s first day.

The organization carried out a COVID-19 vaccination campaign, which is the first such opportunity in the country.

The demand for the vaccine was high. The vets waited in the snow for a chance to get the shots. Some came and went in less than an hour. Others expected much more.

VA said it hopes to improve waiting times in the future.

“We are working on it so that everyone gets to the hospital in the areas where we can get vaccinated as quickly as possible.” said volunteer service officer Patrick Sinclair.

Despite everything, the men and women of the line who served our country say that everyone can help in this struggle.

“If you are thinking about not being able to [the vaccine], please rethink, ”said veteran Thomas Harrison. “Please rethink. Because it will help the whole country. It is not just a person or individual, it is about the whole country. “

The walk-in clinic will be open Sunday and Monday on the Bowling campus near the University of Kentucky. The VA has adjusted the original times. Now it will open at 8am. The cut will be at 14h. Anyone in line or in the parking lot before that date will be served.
