It took Loeffler some time to get to this place. Her defeat was evident on election night, as she was after Warnock by tens of thousands of votes, but the Republican told her supporters that she believed she still had a path to victory before bragging that she was going to Washington to oppose the counting of the Electoral College votes in Congress. News organizations called the race for Warnock early Wednesday morning.

Loeffler initially objected to the results of the Electoral College, before violence and chaos fell on the U.S. Capitol after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building. After the Senate met again, she changed her position and said she would no longer object to the results of the presidential elections in her state.

In the second round of the state Senate, CNN projected that Democrat Jon Ossoff defeated current Republican Senator David Perdue. Perdue has not yet conceded, but lost by more than 40,000 votes, with 99% of the votes counted. Ossoff’s margin of victory is currently outside the margin that would allow a recount of the results.

The Democrats’ two victories will give the party control of the U.S. Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris able to break off relations in the House.
