Local meeting: Smyrna’s Williams leaves UD and goes to South Carolina – Delaware State News

NEWARK – Debo Williams’ promising football career at the University of Delaware ended before it even started.

The former Smyrna High All-State linebacker announced on social media on Thursday that he is moving to FBS Division I in South Carolina.

Williams trained with Blue Hens last fall, after the season was postponed to spring.

“First of all, I want to thank the University of Delaware for the opportunity they gave me,” he posted on Twitter. “I am nothing but grateful.

“However, things have changed in my life and with much prayer and guidance from God, I will continue my academic and athletic career at the University of South Carolina.”

“God told me to follow my dreams, so I’m on my way,” Williams also posted on his Twitter page, which now features a photo of him in a South Carolina shirt with the number zero.

The Gamecocks hired Oklahoma assistant Shane Beamer as their head coach in early December.

Defense of the Year Player of 2019, Williams recorded 153 tackles as a senior in Smyrna. He posted nearly 500 career tackles and received three honors from all states.

“He was one of those guys who rarely looks bad on a football field,” said Delaware coach Danny Rocco, when Blue Hens signed Williams. “When you watch the game movie – and not just the highlights – you see him doing all the things that I think you need to see a guy do.”
