LIVE UPDATES: David Perdue will be quarantined days before Georgia’s runoff

US Senator David Perdue of Georgia will be quarantined after learning that he was in contact with an official who tested positive for coronavirus, his campaign announced on Thursday.

Perdue, 71, learned of his potential exposure on Thursday morning, according to campaign officials. The quarantine will force the Republican to step away from the campaign in just a few days until Georgia’s second runoff.

“Both Senator Perdue and his wife were negative today, but following their doctor’s recommendations and according to CDC guidelines, they will be quarantined,” Perdue’s campaign said in a statement. “The senator and his wife were tested regularly during the campaign and the team will continue to follow CDC guidelines. More information will be provided when available.”

Perdue will face Democrat Jon Ossoff in the second round of January 5. The other Republican senator Kelly Loeffler will face Reverend Raphael Warnock in the other race. The results of the two disputes will determine Senate control at the next Congress.
