Listeria outbreak linked to some types of fresh and soft cheeses, says the CDC

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an alert due to an outbreak of listeria related to certain types of fresh and soft cheeses.

“Don’t eat any fresh, soft Hispanic-style cheese (like queso fresco, queso blanco and queso pan) until we identify a specific type or brand that is making people sick.” the CDC indicated in the alert.

There were seven illnesses, all of which resulted in hospitalizations, in four states, including New York and Connecticut. The other states are Maryland and Virginia.

You are at an increased risk of getting severe Listeria if you are pregnant, 65 or older, or if you have a weakened immune system due to certain medical conditions or treatments, the CDC said.

Symptoms include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures, as well as fever and muscle aches.
