Lions reportedly interviewed Ravens QB coach James Urban for the position of offensive coordinator

ALLEN PARK – Dan Campbell is trying to bring Aaron Glenn with him from New Orleans as his defensive coordinator. We now have the first name linked to the position of offensive coordinator.

Ravens quarterback coach James Urban, interviewed for the offensive coordinator on Wednesday, according to the NFL network. Urban has no known connections to Campbell, instead he came under the Andy Reid coaching tree. He spent the first seven years of his NFL career with Reid in Philadelphia, serving as assistant head coach (2004-06), offensive assistant and quality control coach (2007-08) and quarterback coach (2009-10) .

The quarterbacks he worked with: Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick.

Urban then spent the next seven years training receivers in Cincinnati – two of whom were Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu – before taking over as Ravens quarterback coach in 2018.

The quarterback he worked with there: Lamar Jackson, who became the youngest MVP in league history in 2019.

Urban is an interesting candidate because he has no known connections with Dan Campbell – new coaches often like to surround themselves with people they know, as Matt Patricia did with Paul Pasqualoni and other employees – and most of his recent experience has worked with double threat quarterbacks. Matthew Stafford, in case you haven’t noticed, is not exactly a double threat.

If this hiring happens, it will be interesting to see what exactly Campbell has in mind for his crime.

Either way, the outside interview is a strong indication that Darrell Bevell may be leaving after serving two seasons as Detroit’s offensive coordinator. Cory Undlin is expected to be discharged after serving a season as a defensive coordinator, and Brayden Coombs didn’t even last his first season as a special team coordinator. He was fired for calling his own fake punt in the fourth half of a game in Tennessee.
