Although the deal will not become official until the new year of the league, the Lions dealt with the defender’s position negotiating for Jared Goff.

But that does not mean that Lions will not choose another QB as seventh place in April.

“I like the crop of defenders coming out of this year’s draft,” said general manager Brad Holmes at his news conference on Tuesday. “When you’re in the top 10, you know each position better, regardless of what your circumstances are currently on your list.”

Holmes did not use names, but described the main passersby as having different skill sets.

“I think the position of defender in general, what is cool this year is that they are in all different flavors,” said Holmes. “You have a guy who can really do everything, who can do it out of his pocket, do it with his legs. You have another guy who probably does this a little bit more with his legs, a little bit more creative. There is another guy who probably does more out of pocket. So, all the different flavors make this very, very intriguing in terms of when you’re looking at the whole scope of the class of these defenders. “

As a former college scouting director for the Rams, Holmes knows Goff well. But he reiterated that with a choice in the top ten, Detroit has to get to know the best defenders in depth and assess whether they fit into the organization.

If Lions decide to make a QB, Goff can enter the season as a starter and allow the newcomer to grow and develop.
