After all the poaching that Auburn’s football did to the South Carolina football program, it looked like the Tigers had a legitimate chance of getting the 2022 QB Gunner Stockton out of the Gamecocks as well.
Not long ago, it was rumored that Stockton was potentially destined for the plains:
There appears to be smoke on Tuesday (I intended to do this) in connection with a fire from Stockton to Auburn. The Tigers seem to be shifting their attention to the position, with Dematrius Davis going to the Plains next season to give Bo Nix the competition at the flag spot.
Scott could eventually compete with double D for representatives, but Stockton – being a five star recruit – would end up having the keys to the attack.
That would be a great achievement for Auburn football, and Mike Bobo’s connection to South Carolina cannot be overstated. Hiring Harsin’s offensive coordinator could lead directly to a quarterback who would change the program and end up under the center in 2022 and beyond.
Now, the talented Tiger gunslinger, Georgia will not be a Tiger … but instead he will go to Georgia:
Georgia’s 2022 recruiting class got a big boost on Thursday with 5-star quarterback Gunner Stockton committing to the Bulldogs.
The Tiger native, from Georgia, is classified as the best defender in the 2022 class, the 4th player from Georgia and the 38th in the country in general, for 247 sports.
Georgia will bring on board a player just out of a brilliant junior season. Stockton shot for 3,128 yards, 45 touchdowns and four interceptions, adding up to 1,581 yards and 26 scores on the ground.
It is undoubtedly disappointing news for Auburn football fans, who have yet to see any major recruits change course in their commitments to increase Tigers recruitment for the coming seasons.
Of course, in recent seasons, the team has not focused enough resources on bringing in the best talent, losing to more successful conference opponents.
That said, while it’s easy to focus on the negative aspects now, it’s important to remember that while Stockton won’t be going to Auburn for the next few years, a double threat quarterback who dominated the battlefield in the country’s most football-obsessed state moving to the plains in 2021.
Dematrius Davis could make us forget Stockton if he could keep his promise that his high school career is cultivating as we speak. After scoring seven touchdowns in one game this season – three in the air and the other four with lightning-fast feet – Davis declared to the world that his size (he is less than six feet tall and weighs less than 90 pounds) it will stop him from dominating the golf course.
As Stockton grows in the state of Peach, he may have a legitimate pair in the Plains in “double D”.
Davis is the silver lining that Auburn football fans need to hang on to today, after seeing his opponent from “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” steal Bryan Harsin’s idea of stealing from the Gamecocks football program all of his best pieces.
