South Carolina football fans are well aware of how the former wide receiver Deebo Samuel earned its nickname from the movie ‘Friday’. Well, transfer the linebacker Debo Williams it is also a product of the film. He doesn’t even recognize his birth name, Darryl.
“If you call me Darryl, I will look at you like crazy because I don’t know who you are,” Williams said in his first Gamecocks football media availability session on Wednesday.
Williams says he does his best to impersonate the late Tom Lister Jr., who played the character ‘Deebo’ in the film.
“In the movie Friday, the guy Deebo was a bully,” said Williams. “I am not a bully in real life, but on the football field I am a bully and I will let you know that. That’s why, if you watch my movie or highlights, I try to kill you when I pass you. I’m not trying to attack you, I’m trying to hurt you. I don’t want you to go back to the countryside.
“When I was five or six, when exercising in Oklahoma was legal, my coach gave people nicknames while we were batting. I ran straight to someone and he said, ‘Debo!’ and he’s been stuck ever since. Parents, aunt, everyone calls me Debo. “

Williams, who is from Smyrna, Del., Spent the fall 2020 semester at the University of Delaware. The Blue Hens 2020 season has been postponed to spring. Williams entered the transfer portal during the winter after a childhood friend and freshman in a red Gamecocks shirt running back SeaShawn Lloyd said he could take Williams to Carolina because of the need for the team’s linebackers.
