Lilbits: rise of MediaTek, an E Ink monitor and marriage to Arduino and Raspberry Pi

Apple can make the best performing smartphone chips, but they are only used on Apple phones, tablets and PCs, which means they have limited market share.

Meanwhile, rivals such as Qualcomm and MediaTek (and to some extent Samsung) sell their chips to several phone manufacturers, which helped them launch a very of processors.

With a product line ranging from basic to premium chips, Qualcomm has dominated this space in recent years. But, according to a new report from Counterpoint, MediaTek took first place for the first time in the most recent quarter.

MediaTek also has a wide range of solutions, but the company is probably better known for its mid-range chips than for its cutting-edge solutions. And while flagship phones make all the headlines, the truth is that many mid-range phones are sold, which certainly helped MediaTek’s rise. The counterpoint suggests that the U.S. trade ban on Huawei probably didn’t hurt either.

  • First impressions of the Librem 5 Evergreen Linux phone [Notta Pro / YouTube]
This video provides a very critical view of the shortcomings of using a Purism Librem 5 now and why it is best thought of as a developer / enthusiast-centric device. Some issues have already been resolved through software updates. Others do not. I’m calling the reddit topic instead of the YouTube video because it’s worth reading the discussion. It is also worth noting – Librem 5 can run alternative operating systems and has more powerful hardware than Pinephone, but a smaller developer community so far.
