Rapper Lil Wayne thanked former President Donald Trump for forgiving him in one of his final acts before leaving the White House.
Trump issued a series of pardons and sentence commutations on Wednesday morning, as he prepared to leave the presidency. Among them was Wayne – whose real name was Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. – who faced a gun charge.
The artist accessed Twitter on Thursday, writing: “I want to thank President Trump for recognizing that I have a lot more to offer to my family, my art and my community.”
The 38-year-old Grammy winner also thanked his lawyer, “I also want to thank @bradfordcohen for working so diligently to secure another chance for me. Love! – Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.”

Wayne was charged in Florida on November 17 for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a federal crime that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

“Mr. Carter pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted criminal, due to a conviction more than 10 years ago,” said the White House. “Deion Sanders, who … wrote in support of this forgiveness, calls Mr. Wayne ‘a provider for his family, a friend for many, a man of faith, a natural giver for the less fortunate, a path maker , [and] a game changer. ‘”

The pardon comes months after Wayne outraged some of his fans by being sympathetic to Trump before the November election. On October 29, Wayne shared a photo of himself smiling alongside Trump after meeting with him about his administration’s “Platinum Plan” designed to create jobs and opportunities in the black community.

Fellow rapper Kodak Black, who was serving a gun sentence, was also on Trump’s list of people who received a commutation sentence. The 23-year-old Black – real name Bill K. Kapri – shared a note of gratitude also on Wednesday.
Bradford Cohen, who worked with Black and Wayne, told Fox News that he is “happy” for his clients.

“I think President Trump and his administration have been tireless advocates on behalf of the African American community. These pardons are a perfect example of this administration following its reforms and commitments. I thank President Trump for his advocacy for justice reform. I am happy for my two clients, “said Cohen.
