LG launches new QNED Mini LED TVs before CES 2021

It’s almost a new year, and LG is ready to celebrate with yet another new acronym for TV technology: QNED Mini LED TV, a new series of televisions that will debut at LG’s Virtual CES Expo on January 11, 2021. The QNED TVs feature quantum dots and LG’s NanoCell technology on their monitors for greater brightness and color reproduction, but more importantly, these new TVs will also be powered by up to 30,000 mini LEDs that add more dimming zones to this premium line.

Despite the buzz surrounding these new QNED TVs, LG made a point of stating that they are still a step below the company’s OLED TVs, which offer emissive display technology that allows each individual pixel to be turned on and off independently for the leading contrast of industry between the lightest and darkest images on the screen. Although mini LEDs are smaller than the backlights of traditional screens, they are not “emissive screens” like OLED and Samsung’s new MicroLED technology, so they cannot create the same level of contrast.

Still, the new QNED TVs can be a hit with those looking for a brighter alternative to OLED monitors. We can also expect QNED TVs to be cheaper than LG’s comparable OLED TVs. Its most direct competitors today are the TCL 8 Series Mini LED TVs and Samsung’s QLED TVs.

“Our new QNED Mini LED series is a premium home entertainment option that expands and improves LCD TV space and offers consumers another great viewing option,” said Nam Ho-jun, senior vice president, R&D, LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

LG says its 2021 QNED line will include 10 new 4K and 8K models in all, for a wide range of screen sizes and price ranges. The top QNED TV, an 86K 8-inch monster, will feature up to 2,500 adjustable zones for exceptional contrast, along with (we hope) stunning brightness and color reproduction thanks to its mix of other display technologies such as quantum dots. To put things in perspective, this equates to up to 10 times the number of dimming zones that you will see on traditional LED TVs.

At its virtual Expo on January 11, LG will have a live display of its new 86-inch QNED 8K TV, which the company hopes will give it a market edge over rivals like Samsung and TCL. We’ll have to wait and see if QNED can be proud of the other great Mini-LED TVs available today, but LG’s other OLED and LED offerings give us confidence that their new alphabetical entry in the TV’s acronym library will be valid. .
