Lego is announcing a new themed video game set featuring Sonic the Hedgehog and characters from Sonic Mania. (If you could tell me at the age of six that one day there would be a Sonic-themed Lego set, he would cry for joy.)
You can take a look at the concept design of the stage, which has the classic Sonic Green Hill Zone stage theme at the top of this post. I love how ridiculous Sonic looks in Lego form, and Doctor Eggman’s imposing Death Egg Robot is just incredible.
The concept of the set was submitted to Lego by Viv Grannell, a Sonic fan based in the United Kingdom, through the Lego Ideas program. Entries must receive 10,000 votes before Lego considers making them a true Lego set, so it is no small feat that Grannell has obtained the support needed to make the idea a reality. If you want to see more photos of the concept, check out the Grannell page for the project on the Lego Ideas website.
Lego says that the set is entering the “product development phase”, so it looks like we are a long way from being able to buy it.
Last year, Lego immersed itself in video game crossovers with its Mario-thematic sets. These have an interactive element to them. The Lego Mario figure will play a sound when it is placed on a pipe or when you make it jump on a Goomba, for example. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Lego Sonic will be able to make any noise, so don’t expect to hear any of its sarcastic jokes. Perhaps Lego can add them to a future set.
