Lee Mason: Referee removed from Sheffield United vs Liverpool after Brighton row

What happened?

Dunk described Mason’s decision to dismiss his West Brom goal as “horrible” and said the referee lost control of the game when Brighton lost on Saturday.

On 28 minutes at The Hawthorns, Alexis Mac Allister was knocked down at the entrance to the West Brom area. While Dunk was lining up the free kick, Mason blew his whistle. West Brom goalkeeper Johnstone was not yet done with his barrier and was standing on the right post when Dunk scored the free kick to the empty side of the goal.

Mason blew his whistle a second time after Dunk took the free kick, and the two groups of players immediately surrounded the referee to defend his case.

At first, the goal was overturned, before Mason seemed to change his mind. He was then instructed to use the field-side monitor and, after consulting VAR, Simon Hooper, Mason reversed the decision to award the goal to Brighton.

Mason suffered a muscle injury at the end of the match, which led to his being removed from the Premier League clash between Sheffield United and Liverpool on Sunday.

What was the reaction?

Dunk told Sky Sports: “It’s embarrassing, it’s a horrendous decision, I said to the referee ‘can I accept it?’ he blew the whistle and I took it.

“Why doesn’t he come and talk to the press like me? Never, do they hide behind their bubble.

“I don’t think he knew what he was doing. He scored, why did he score? I don’t know why VAR was getting involved, he said ‘objective’ … you can watch the video if you want.

When asked if Mason lost control of the game, Dunk replied, “Yes, he did. Fact that.”

Has Mason been criticized before?

Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo was previously fined £ 25,000 for saying Mason was not good enough to be in the Premier League in December.
