Lee County COVID-19 vaccine sites reached capacity hours before opening

LEE COUNTY, Florida – Several dozen people set up camp overnight outside Bonita Springs Library and the Fort Myers Stars Complex to dial their number in line to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Some people brought tents where others brought chairs and blankets.

There were three places where people over 65, or frontline employees, could get the coronavirus vaccine on Tuesday. All three Lee County vaccination sites reached maximum capacity at 8:20 am on Tuesday.

Vaccination is scheduled to start at 9am in the library until 12pm, after 2pm to 6pm

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers to expect extreme traffic delays near the Bonita Springs Library vaccination site. Delegates will be on site directing traffic, but drivers should expect long delays throughout the day.

People also went to the East County Regional Library and the Fort Myers Stars Complex to get the vaccine. The times are the same, from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm

At a news conference on Monday morning, Lee County Manager Roger Desjarlais asked people not to line up at night or early in the morning at vaccination sites. Lee County deputies were sent to monitor the sites to make sure everyone was safe. Some deputies distributed coffee to some people waiting in line.

Each test site will vaccinate 300 to 400 people a day, depending on demand and volume.
