Leading Mets GM candidates after Jared Porter’s resignation

Jared Porter’s resignation on Tuesday for sending obscene text messages to a reporter in 2016 left Mets in search of a second general manager this off-season.

The options for team president Sandy Alderson to fill the vacancy may be limited, with less than a month before pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training. A look at some possibilities:

Zack Scott

The former Red Sox executive was hired last month as Porter’s top lieutenant, overseeing analysis and systems. Scott was the runner-up in the job when Porter was hired. Scott started with the Red Sox in 2004 and was part of the three World Series winners with Boston.

John Ricco

A mainstay in the organization for nearly two decades, Ricco was part of Sandy Alderson’s transition team and helped with interviews to hire GM. Ricco previously served as a GM assistant under Omar Minaya and Alderson before becoming part of a triumvirate who replaced Alderson after his resignation in 2018. In the past two seasons, Ricco has led special projects for Mets and has been involved in contract negotiation.

JP Ricciardi

The Giants’ special assistant was one of the finalists for the job when Porter was hired last month and has a long relationship with Alderson, who dates from the 1980s in Oakland. Ricciardi was a special assistant on the Mets board from 2011 to 18 and has previous GM experience in Toronto.

Michael Hill

The former president of baseball operations at Marlins was one of the finalists for GM’s position when Porter was hired. Hill remains a free agent.
