Leaders report 1,684 new COVID-19 cases, 18 new deaths

SANTO ANTÓNIO – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff updated the community on the local response to COVID-19 in their daily briefing on Saturday night.

Nirenberg reported 159,519 total cases of COVID-19 and 1,892 total deaths in Bexar County, an increase of 1,684 new cases on Saturday. Eighteen new deaths were reported today.

The 7-day moving average of cases is 1,806.

City officials also reported that 1,375 patients are hospitalized, 414 are in the intensive care unit and 252 are on ventilators. There are 13% of beds available and 51% of fans available.

There have been 174 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, said Nirenberg.

Mayor Nirenberg also gave some assurances to residents of San Antonians during the briefing, saying it is important that residents continue to be patient and follow health guidelines while the city receives more doses of vaccine in the coming weeks.

Those who wish to schedule the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, or those who received the first dose before January 13 at Alamodome, will be contacted by Metro Health. There is a window of 21-28 days to receive the second dose.

“You can still receive your dose after that window, but we will work hard to ensure that everyone receives it by the time it was prescribed,” said Mayor Nirenberg.

Those who do not receive a call two days before the scheduled date must call 311 and dial option 8. They will be contacted with an operator who will check the next appointment.

Those who received their first dose of COVID-19 from University Health or WellMed must have scheduled their second dose on the same day as the first appointment. If you have not scheduled your next appointment, you can find more information in our story below.
