Lawson becomes coach of the All-SEC team

South Carolina Junior Guard AJ Lawson was named to the Second Coaches All-SEC Team on Tuesday morning. It’s the second post-season career tribute to Lawson, who was also nominated for the All-Freshman team in 2019.

Lawson takes action at the SEC Tournament this week with a team average of 16.9 points per game, while also receiving 4.1 rebounds, distributing 1.3 assists and collecting 1.5 steals per game. Your points per game are fourth in the SEC (general games), and your thefts per game are tied for 10º in the league. Lawson has left his mark beyond the arc this season, as his 35.6 percent reach is second in the league, and his 163 career 3-point points are eighth in Carolina’s history. He has 16 games this season with several brands in the 3-point range, with 13 games with three or more outside the arc, and he is in 26th placeº in the country this season with 2.90 made 3s per game.

Earlier this season, Lawson scored 1,000º point of his career, becoming the 47thº Carolina 1,000-point club member. He has 17 games with double-digit scores this season, and 58 in his career, and he has led or shared the team’s lead by scoring 10 times this season and 32 times during his time at Garnet and Black. He also has 10 games scoring 20 or more points this season, including a record 30 in his home win over Texas A&M. Lawson’s selection for the second team marks the sixth consecutive season that Carolina has had a member of the first or second team coaches.

South Carolina is the 11th seed in this week’s SEC Tournament in Nashville, and starts the post-season action on Thursday, March 11, at approximately 9:30 ET against Ole sixth seed Miss. The match will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
