Larry Ogunjobi leaving the Browns to sign with the Bengals

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Browns agreed to the terms of one of their previous draft choices on Wednesday, when Rashard Higgins was brought back for a one-year contract. They also lost one of their previous choices when defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi agreed to go south for a few hours to play for Bengals.

The agreement was reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Ogunjobi, a choice in the third round in 2017, when Andrew Berry was with the Browns for the first time, is making a one-year contract to play for an AFC North opponent. The move came as no surprise after the Browns removed Andrew Billings from the Bengals last season and summoned Jordan Elliott in the third round in 2020. The Browns also have Sheldon Richardson within their line. Billings has chosen to leave the 2020 season, but is expected to return this fall.

Ogunjobi played 60 games for the Browns and had 14.5 sacks, including consecutive seasons of 5.5 sack in 2018-2019. He added 29 tackles for defeat in his four seasons. Initially seen as a theft from Charlotte, various systems and movement within the line seemed to slow its momentum.

The fifth-year tackle seemed almost resigned to the fact that he might not be here in 2021, when he last spoke to the media after the end of the season.

“If it is going to happen, it will happen. If not, it is what it is, ”said Ogunjobi. “I know the person I am, the player I am, the potential I have and the work I will continue to do to improve.”

Ogunjobi was also active in the Browns’ social justice efforts this season and joined Myles Garrett as part of former NFL player Chris Long’s Waterboys initiative.
