Large-scale vaccination clinics increase next week across Alabama

Health officials in Huntsville have an ambitious goal of delivering three COVID-19 vaccines per minute next week, as health facilities across the state launch large-scale vaccination clinics with expansion criteria for those eligible to receive vaccines. .

The Huntsville Hospital clinic will be in the Jaycee Building in John Hunt Park off Airport Road and available to those who have applied and meet the criteria set by the Alabama Department of Public Health. The photos will be managed inside the Jaycee Building and not on a drive-through.

Huntsville will be expanding its vaccination efforts on Monday, as those eligible for vaccination expand to people 65 years of age or older, along with new occupations defined as “essential” by ADPH, such as teachers and grocery workers.

Sites in Mobile, Hoover and Auburn sued people for vaccinations at large clinics this week.

ADPH designated eight sites across the state next week to start large-scale vaccination clinics: Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma and Tuscaloosa. It is the first effort in Alabama to deliver more than 1,000 vaccines every day to each location.

David Spillers, president and CEO of Huntsville Hospital, said the hospital would receive additional doses of the Pfizer vaccine in order to vaccinate up to 2,000 people a day. Those who receive the first dose of vaccination will also be scheduled for the second dose, Spillers said.

“We will be serving 1,500-2,000 people a day at the clinic,” said Spillers. “We feel comfortable being able to deal with that number of people.

“Put that in context, if you make 2,000 people a day, in a 10-hour day, there are 3 more people every minute that you are vaccinating. A lot needs to happen for this to go through the system. “

Elsewhere around the site, the capacity is about 800 people vaccinated due to limited vaccine supply. Authorities said they hoped to increase that capacity by 1,000 a day by the weekend.

“The biggest limitation we now have in managing the pandemic is the availability of vaccines,” said Spillers.
