LA County will not achieve full vaccination until summer 2022 at the current rate, says Garcetti

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – At the current rate, vaccination for the entire population of Los Angeles County will not be completed until June 2022, according to Mayor Eric Garcetti.

The mayor says the bleak prospects are all about supply and demand.

“If you take the calculation of what the county is getting each week – about 160,000 – and you just look at the number of health professionals and the elderly, we are not going to go through them until June (2021),” he said.

However, Garcetti points out that the pace will not stay as it is, especially if other COVID-19 vaccines from AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, which require only one dose, are authorized for use.

At the Dodger Stadium vaccination site, up to 12,000 doses can be administered per day. But a week after the stadium’s parking lot moved from a test site to a super vaccination site, only 2,000 doses are available daily.

Despite supply limitations, more than 46,000 people were vaccinated this week at the five vaccination sites administered by the city, representing an increase of 90% over the previous week. More than 80,000 people were vaccinated at the city’s vaccination sites.

Five-hour waiting times have been reported at Dodger Stadium as the Angelenos gather at the country’s largest capacity vaccination site.

The authorities say extensive planning has been done to ensure that the site operates smoothly and effectively, but distribution problems are affecting the site.

Several people said they waited up to five hours on Wednesday to be vaccinated. The AIR7 HD was above the site, as a handful of cars remained in line at 11 pm – three hours after the site was officially closed.

However, on Thursday afternoon, waiting times improved significantly.

In the meantime, by the end of Friday, the city of Los Angeles will finish offering COVID-19 vaccines to all residents of specialist wards.

The mayor said that at the beginning of the pandemic, 45% of coronavirus deaths occurred among vulnerable residents of these facilities.

“Many people are still dying, and with more contagious variants of COVID-19 taking root, which may contribute to why we had such an increase in December, there is no more urgent task than getting this site and others like this keep vaccinating our residents, “said Garcetti.
