Kyle Rudolph released by Vikings, 49ers could point him out as a free agent

The Minnesota Vikings announced on Tuesday the launch of the Pro Bowl tight end, Kyle Rudolph. Although 49ers don’t have a lot of money to play at the free agency, Rudolph is the type of player that they could allocate some of their resources to.

San Francisco’s last off-season chased free agent TE Austin Hooper before he signed what was then the most expensive contract ever with the Cleveland Browns. If they are still looking for a TE option to pair with George Kittle, Rudolph makes a lot of sense.

At 31, Rudolph’s days as a primary weapon are likely behind him. However, until last year, when he picked up only one, he was still an efficient touchdown scorer. In the previous five years, he has averaged six touchdown catchers per season.

The previous choice of the second round is still a weapon in the red zone that is cunning enough to open up and physical enough to beat defenders in contested pitches. Being able to connect you as a pass catcher would be a significant upgrade for San Francisco over Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner, who are blocking TEs primarily.

San Francisco should not be willing to break Rudolph’s bank, and if a team offers him the starting money, the 49ers will be out of the running. On the other hand, if his market reaches something they can afford, 49ers should certainly aim to bring the Pro Bowler twice.
