ANAHEIM – The Angels have increased their catch by agreeing to a $ 1.5 million one-year contract with veteran Kurt Suzuki, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com on Friday. The Angels, however, did not make an official announcement.
Suzuki plans to share tasks behind the board with Max Stassi. Anthony Bemboom also remains on the list of 40 players, behind Suzuki and Stassi, which may be important as Stassi is coming out of surgery on his left hip in October. The low-cost business also allows Angels to remain aggressive in their quest for launches.
Suzuki, 37, has local ties as he won the College World Series with Cal State Fullerton in 2004, and is familiar with the new general manager Perry Minasian of his time with Braves in 2018.
Suzuki played 33 games with the Nationals in the shortened 2020 season, reaching .270 / .349 / .396 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 33 games. He remained a productive hitter at the end of his career, as he also hit .264 / .324 / .486 with a record of 17 home runs and 63 RBIs in 85 games in 19, helping nationals to win a World Series title.
Suzuki, an All-Star with the Twins in ’14, played 14 seasons at the Majors, hitting 0.259 / 0.316 / 0.392 with 133 homers and 669 RBIs in 1,512 games. He is also considered a leader of the club and, with his experience, will also help the pitching team.
